A great community experience requires good governance
It's through the hard work and dedication of those who have built this community, as well as the unique contributions of newcomers that Beech will continue to grow and thrive. Together, we preserve what makes Beech Community special, honoring our rich traditions and creating a bright future for all with good governance. Good governance fosters trust, inclusiveness, and collaboration for the well-being of all.
Key Principles of Good Governance
Here are the guiding principles that shape how a well governed community program operates and thrives. The Beech Community By-Laws, created in the 1990s, includes many of these elements,
1. Democratic Decision-Making
Major community decisions are made democratically. Leaders and representatives are voted in by the people, ensuring their actions are aligned with the interests and values of the majority. The Beech by-laws call for annual community meetings.
2. Term Limits
To keep leadership fresh and dynamic, elected leaders serve no longer than three years per term. This ensures new ideas have a seat at the table, while maintaining continuity, and minimizing any person staying in power too long at the expense of the community. Our Beech community by-laws have three (3) years as the term limit.
3. Oversight by a Board of Directors
A Board of Directors, typically 9-15 people, provides clear direction and oversight of the community's operations and officers, ensuring accountability and integrity in every action taken. Our Beech community by-laws provide for up to 15 directors.
4. Inclusivity
Good leadership is inclusive, reflecting the diverse range of voices, perspectives, and backgrounds in our community. In Beech this may mean young and old, legacy and newcomer families, neighborhoods, religous beliefs, political views, and genders.
5. Transparency
Transparency is key to trust. Beech Community need full transparency, by recording and publishing meetings, detailed financial records, and all major decisions for public access. The community deserves to see how decisions are made and resources are managed.
The Benefits of Good Governance
Everyone Has a Voice. Your opinions matter. A good democratic process ensures that every community member has an equal opportunity to shape the direction of Beech Community.
Everyone Is Valued. No matter your background, occupation, point of view, or how long you’ve been in Beech, you are a vital part of our community, and your interests should be represented.
The Best Decisions Are Made. With a range of voices and transparent accountability, we position ourselves to make well-informed, balanced decisions that work in the best interest of the community.
Financial Responsibility. Good governance means wise stewardship of community resources. Every dollar is carefully tracked, budgets are published, and long-term financial health is a top priority. In well-run non-profits, there is separate of powers where the president or chair does not control the money.
